Meet Gunner!
Gunner is a big, beautiful Appaloosa mix (we don't know with what) that came into our rescue and training program a few weeks ago. He is 5 years old, at (or over) 16hh, and weighs around 1300lbs. He is our newest addition into our training program, and once he has completed groundwork and riding classes, he will be available for adoption!
His previous owner wanted to start him out right, but realized quickly that he did not have enough time to spend with him, and wanted him to have a fulfilled, happy life, and sent him to our rescue and training program. He came in with rain rot and sun burn on his face, but is being treated and his coat is growing slowly but surely. He has a lovely personality, but will most likely need an intermediate rider that will be able to advance his training and able to put in the time and patience this young horse needs to make a great lifelong companion.
Gunner had his teeth floated on 8/9/16.

Update: 8/15/16
Gunner is doing very well with groundwork. Because the body language training we use is easily applied to horses with all kinds of backgrounds and levels of training, the horses benefit from the ease in communication, and this makes them more willing to participate in training and bonding exercises. He is a very friendly guy, and will make a great addition to someone's herd in the future. He is low man on the totem pole.

Update: 11/17/16
Gunner's training was going exceptionally well- he was learning to give to pressure, keeping his head level or low, and respecting personal space! All was well, until some swelling was seen on his forehead... It was though to be an injury, and he was treated with anti-inflammatories. Things seemed to be improving after about a week, but when the course of anti-inflammatories was finished, another week went by and things got much worse. The swelling on the forehead doubled in size, and swelling moved to both of his eyelids. At this point, we knew it was something different. We had xrays done, which has uncovered a frontal sinus cyst- Poor baby! This is not a common condition, and will require surgery, and is creating a lot of pressure in his sinuses, which comes with much discomfort and pain. Needless to say, all training exercises have been completely stopped, and all he can do is be on turnout until this is corrected. We are still exploring options, but we know that the surgery to remove a piece of bone to remove the cyst and allow draining is expensive, and due to our equine program being funded solely on adoption fees (we are not state-funded), we will be setting up a GoFundMe page for his care.
We appreciate any contributions, and we hope that we can get Gunner the help he needs very quickly!
